The Society of Fire Protection Engineers are a society whose members are dedicated to applying scientific and engineering principles to make the world safer from fire. We share a passion for enhancing human safety and welfare, and preserving our way of life, our cultural heritage and our environment from the detrimental effects of fire.
Society of Fire Protection Engineers members are the world’s top experts in engineering, design, education and research focusing on providing creative and effective solutions to fire-related problems. Our members have reached their level of competence, respect and trust through intense training, credentialing, continuing education and leadership.
Society of Fire Protection Engineers members are regionally active in 70 global chapters (as of January 2017) and work across a variety of industries performing a range of job functions: from identifying and analyzing corporate fire and safety risks to developing and implementing mitigating strategies; from consulting on the design and construction of iconic structures and facilities to designing and approving systems; from conducting groundbreaking research to the development and evaluation of new products and procedures; from providing technical input on the revision of regulations, engineering standards and technical handbooks to providing expert litigation support, to name just a few. These engineers significantly influence a wide range of critical fire safety decisions and are relied upon for their expertise and judgment.
Our members possess in-depth knowledge of regulations and sophisticated methods that enable them to skillfully identify and address fire problems. We utilize fire testing, computer simulations and other techniques in analyzing fire behavior, its potential effects, and the manner in which humans respond to it. We are heavily involved in making product decisions for our projects, and recommend, specify or purchase millions of dollars in products and services annually.
The Society of Fire Protection Engineers develops curricula for both formal engineering degree programs and continuing education courses. We actively promote the credentialing of our profession and are responsible for developing the content of the Professional Licensing Exam in Fire Protection Engineering. We also deliver the necessary training and professional development programs that enable members to stay current in the field.
