Automatic Smoke Containment
Every Building under construction or under Fire safety review now requires a SHEVS assessment (smoke, heat, exhaust ventilation system). Fire doors/Fire shutters alone have proven inadequate to manage the rapid spread of superheated smoke, the most likely killer in the presence of a fire. The larger the building is, the more difficult it is to contain smoke and there is now a higher level of planning, specification required to achieve optimum protection to people and properties.
Open space design in buildings offers greater flexibility and use of space in a development. It also offers greater challenges to Engineers, Architects and Fire safety professionals to ensure the safety of people and property in the event of a fire and the rapid spread of superheated smoke. The traditional static and solid down containment systems are restrictive and consume space and obscure visibility.
Smoke and Fire curtains are now constructed using a lightweight fabric with up to 4 hour tested fire protection. They can be easily concealed in the building design and our Fire curtain system can offer wider parameters in the design of your smoke and fire containment system.
Fire rarely visits premises without causing serious casualties and these are primarily from the rapid spread of smoke through the building. Traditional fire doors allow the spread of smoke from all areas of a building whilst they are in the open position during evacuation stage, which can seriously restrict escape routes. Often, fire doors are jammed open during hot summer conditions to allow air to cool an area of the building, this can also allow rapid spread of smoke and render a fire plan ineffective.
Smoke and fire curtains can be designed for initial partial deployment to contain smoke whilst the evacuation procedure is in early deployment. The initial smoke plumes are contained in the increased void area offered by the smoke/Fire Curtain with constant removal of smoke via the extract/air flow systems. When the evacuation is complete the curtain will fully deploy to contain both smoke and fire safely to allow the fire services the crucial time they require to attend and combat the fire.
