iMist First to Certify Full Water Mist System to New UK Fire Safety Standard
iMist has helped the Fire Protection Association (FPA) establish the UK’s first UKAS-accredited test route for BS EN 14972-17:2025, the standard now governing water mist systems fitted in homes, flats, care homes and hotels, and has become the first company to certify a complete system against it.
The distinction matters: since BS 8458:2015 was withdrawn in July 2025, the industry has lacked a proven, accredited way to test water mist systems against the new standard. iMist’s work with the FPA closes that gap, giving every manufacturer in the sector, not just iMist, a credible route to independent testing, while iMist itself becomes the first to use it.

Testing the whole system, rather than pump, pipework, nozzles and controls separately, shows how the parts perform together under real fire test conditions, closer to how the system will actually behave once installed. The system certified is the one iMist designs, manufactures, installs and services in-house.
Alex Pollard, Operations Director, said:
“Working through the transition from BS 8458 to BS EN 14972-17 has been a significant learning curve for us and the wider industry. Being able to show the performance of our complete system against the current standard, at a UKAS-accredited facility, gives our customers and the wider industry clear evidence of that work.
“This is just the beginning. Having passed Part 17, we’re now working through Part 1 and the rest of the series. We’re excited for what that will bring.”
The certification builds on iMist’s earlier testing record with the FPA. In 2022, iMist became the first company to pass the FPA’s UKAS-accredited BS 8458 Annex C test and has continued testing against each standard as it has changed.
