Day One
9th October kicks off with a breakfast briefing on contractor competency from Stephen Adams from BAFE. Enjoy a free breakfast and get straight down to the serious consequences of insufficient fire safety and the importance of checking the qualifications of a contractor.
Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy, the importance of protecting tall buildings is as prevalent as ever and Stewart Kidd from BAFSA, a respected risk assessor with over 40 years’ experience, will be providing key advice and warnings in an Independent Review of Fire Safety. This theme is continued into the afternoon as speakers Sebastien Hung from Horizon Facades and Ray Putton from EMS share case studies of the devastating effect fire has on tall buildings. Identified risks, reliable detection methods and safe evacuation polices will be discussed as they look at how to prevent disasters.
Day One finishes with the AGM of the Institute of Fire Safety Managers where they aim to raise the awareness of fire safety at a local, national and international level, promote fire prevention, fire protection and reduce the risk from fire as far as reasonably practicable. Attendees can expect to hear a presentation from Dave Price, the UK President at Gexcon, on the Tianjin Explosion.
Day Two
Wednesday morning’s briefing is hosted by members of IFSM and is titled ‘Assessing your fire safety and risk liability’. Breakfast and networking will be followed by a panel session offering advice on contractors carrying out fire safety work and an insurers perspective on liabilities.
Advanced will then explain legal responsibilities and how to ensure fire detection systems are reliable and compliant with the law. Following this, experts from Asecos, Jactone and FFE Ltd come together in a panel session on preventing major chemical fires, fires in varied locations and fires on buses and coaches. New legislations are in place to deal with such incidents and these will be explained along with how invaluable reliable detection systems are.
Alastair Hovey of Fike, explores the various types of suppression systems and why it’s essential for buildings, data centres and commercial premises to install them as a preventative measure. Reliable alarm signalling followed by precise evacuation plans must be in place and in the next session, speakers from BT Redcare, BT Consumer and C-Tec will explain how to action this.
The afternoon is concluded with solicitor Warren Spencer, an accredited Higher Courts Advocate with the experience of over 160 cases, holding a Fire Safety Mock Trial. Based on a real-life prosecution under the Regulatory Reform Order 2005, the audience will be the judge and the jury with chance to debate the evidence and outcome of the case and compare their decisions to that of the actual results.
