Why fire door safety is won or lost at the specification stage
When it comes to fire door safety, the industry has historically placed significant focus on installation. The publication of BS 8214:2026 highlights the importance of taking a more considered approach to fire door specification. It emphasises that fire safety cannot be treated as a final-stage consideration, but must be built into designs from the outset through informed product selection, collaboration and an understanding of how complete fire door assemblies perform.

A complete doorset approach
Too often, fire doors are viewed as individual products, but in reality, it’s the doorset as a whole that determines how it will protect building occupants in the event of a fire. Compartmentation depends on far more than the door leaf itself. Frames, glazing, ironmongery, seals, fixings and installation methods all play a role in ensuring the complete assembly performs as tested.
This creates a challenge when components are specified separately. While a door leaf may achieve a particular fire rating, that rating is only valid when it forms part of a complete doorset that has been designed, tested and installed to perform as an assembly. Substituting or combining components without considering how they work together can affect the overall performance of the system.
Fire resistance is also only one part of the specification process. Depending on the building and its intended use, specifiers must also balance acoustic performance, accessibility, security, durability and aesthetics. The challenge is achieving all of these requirements without compromising the performance of the complete doorset.
The risks of getting it wrong
The consequences of incorrect specification are far greater than selecting the wrong product. Where incompatible components are brought together, a fire doorset may no longer perform as it was originally tested.

The standard reinforces that fire door performance cannot be judged by individual components in isolation, but by how the entire doorset has been designed, tested, specified and installed to work together.
A more assured approach
One way the industry can help reduce this uncertainty is by moving towards the specification of complete doorsets rather than individual door components.
A doorset brings together the door leaf, frame and associated elements as a complete solution, manufactured and assessed as an assembly. This provides greater confidence that components have been designed to work together, reducing the risk of incompatibility between separately sourced products and the likelihood of component substitutions at the installation stage.
With BS 8214:2026 also bringing a renewed focus on documentation, traceability and performance in use, specifying complete doorsets can also support the Golden Thread of information throughout a building’s lifecycle. Having a single, tested solution makes it easier to identify what has been installed, demonstrate compliance and ensure that future inspection, maintenance or replacements continue to preserve the doorset’s intended performance.
This approach can simplify the decision-making process by providing a clearer understanding of how the complete solution will perform. For contractors and installers, it reduces the need to coordinate multiple components on site, while giving building owners and dutyholders greater confidence that the information needed to inspect, maintain and, where necessary, replace the doorset remains readily available throughout its service life.
Building safety starts before installation
The publication of BS 8214:2026 is a reminder that fire door performance is influenced long before a product reaches site.
While installation remains a crucial stage, the foundations for effective fire safety are established much earlier through informed specification decisions.
By considering complete fire doorset assemblies and specifying solutions designed to work as a system, the industry can reduce uncertainty, improve consistency and increase confidence that fire doors will protect those behind them.
